Obituary for Frederick "Rick" Welton Snarr
Frederick "Rick" Welton Snarr, age 74, of Peoria passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born on September 5, 1946, in Laramie, Wyoming, the only son of Otto Welton "Tom" Snarr, Jr. and Fern (Swan) Snarr. He spent his childhood growing up in Laramie and the surrounding Rocky Mountains, where he developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors (fishing, hunting and camping). He attended middle school and high school in Omaha before relocating to Peoria in the Fall of 1963 for his senior year at Richwoods High School, where he played basketball and baseball. He also developed a group of high school friends that remained an active part of his life for over 56 years. He will certainly miss the annual fishing trips with the MAG7.
After high school, Rick attended Valley City State College in Valley City, North Dakota, where he played collegiate basketball, baseball and tennis, while earning his teaching degree. It is in Valley City where he met Sheila (Holmgren), got married and began a family. After graduation, Rick accepted a teaching and coaching position at Richwoods, where he worked from 1968 until his retirement in 2004 with a phenomenal administration and staff. He coached football, basketball (girls and boys) and baseball, which allowed him to coach each of his four children. Rick was recently honored for his years of coaching by Richwoods High School. Over his 36-year career, he was able to encourage thousands of students to pursue their potential for life and education.
Perhaps Rick's most proud accomplishment was his loving marriage of 56 years to Sheila.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Snarr; and his four children, Todd (Kimberly) Snarr of Estero, FL, Ward Snarr of Peoria, Preston (Dee) Snarr of Springfield, IL, and Shayna (Drew) Larsen of Boulder, CO. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Chase, Danielle and Samantha Snarr, Cori, Beau and Kincie Snarr and Trey and Sanna Larsen. He is also survived by Tom Heindselman, his honorary son.
Rick was a long-time member of First Federated Church of Peoria, where he served as a Deacon.
The family is planning a private memorial service, followed by an outdoor celebration of his life. Please visit www.caringbridge.org/visit/ricksnarr for details.
Our family would especially like to thank all the medical staff at OSF for the care provided over the last 3 weeks.
