Obituary for Adele Fleming
Adele J. Fleming, 93, of Peoria passed away Friday, December 7, 2018 at UnityPoint Health Methodist in Peoria.

She was born June 21, 1925 in Englewood, New Jersey, to Warner and Hazel Johnston. Her parents and her sister Marilyn Infield preceded her in death. She married Walter J Fleming Jr on June 3, 1961. Walt passed away in 2007.

Adele is survived by five children, David (Barb) Fleming of Washington, IL, Carol Hobin of Peoria, IL, Bob (Clayton Mattos) Fleming of Boston, MA, Barbara (Irvin) Newburg of Carbon Cliff, IL and Lynn (Michael) Hedden of Cuba, IL, nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and two nieces.

Adele was a woman of many achievements. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Westminster College in 1949. While executive secretary to the president of Gulf Oil, IBM asked Adele to participate in testing the first IBM Selectric typewriter.

In 1969, Adele volunteered at the alternative pre-school program at Zeller Zone Center which she helped develop into Barker School, housed at Children’s Home. Adele retired as Director of Barker School in 1988.

She was a devoted member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria, joyfully serving the Lord as an elder, deacon, teacher, youth group leader, choir member and in women’s mission work. Adele volunteered at Common Place, FISH, WestMark Food Pantry, and Westminster Infant Care Center.

A service celebrating Adele’s life will be at 5 pm on January 9, 2019 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be prior to the service from 3 to 5 pm at the church. Cremation has been accorded.

Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Common Place.
