Obituary for Marcellus Chapman
Marcellus V. Chapman went to be with his Maker at the age of 79, after a battle with cancer. He passed away on September 3, 2011 at his home in Peoria, IL. He was born at Blessing Hospital, Quincy, IL on October 4, 1931 to Maude Veach Chapman. He attended elementary school at Bowen, IL and then the family moved to rural route Canton, Missouri where he graduated Canton High School in 1949. On December 7, 1949, Marcellus was sworn into the U.S. Air Force where he had basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He was shipped to Europe for three years where he served as a weatherman during the Korean War. After discharge he located in Galesburg, IL and married Betty Zahn of Canton, Missouri in 1954. They had three children, Marcellus Chapman, Jr. of Galesburg, IL, Timothy Chapman of Galva, IL, and Jo Ann Chapman Robinson of Cromwell, IN. He later was married to Carolyn Jo Smith of Williamsfield, IL til 1989 and they had two children, Denise Chapman Goodman of Peoria, IL. and Jason Chapman of Peoria, IL. Marcellus attended Knox College and worked at Dohrn Transfer Co. He then started his business, Lindsay Soft Water in Galesburg, IL, now known as Eco Water. He later acquired other water dealerships in Peoria, Lincoln, Bloomington and Springfield. He retired from the water business after 49 years and sold it to his son, Jason. He was active in the Galesburg Elks Lodge where he served on the local, district and state levels and he became a 50 year Honorary Life Member. Marcellus was blessed with five children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Cremation has been accorded and private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made in his name, to the National Elks Foundation, 2750 N. Lakeview Ave., Chicago, IL. 60614-2256.
