Obituary for Timothy Smith
Timothy L. Smith, 47, of Pekin passed away peacefully Monday, January 23, 2012 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center surrounded by family and friends. He was born June 30, 1964 in Peoria to Bobby and Betty (Mahoney) Smith and graduated from Limestone Community High School in 1982. He married Christina “Tina” M. Garrett on September 10, 1988. Tim is survived by his loving wife, daughters Kayla and Chloe Smith both at home, his father, and sisters Debbie Fasano of Washington, Kathy (Mike) McKee of Peoria, and Diana (Troy) Gall of Mapleton and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother. Tim had a great passion for the outdoors, especially deer hunting. He spent many days in his deer stand and loved to talk hunting with others who shared his love. If you didn’t find him in the woods, you’d be likely to find him officiating a ballgame. Tim was a registered official for IHSA, NCAA, ASA and NSA and umpired countless softball games throughout the state of Illinois. He was an IHSA and JFL football official. He was a member of the Central Illinois Softball Association (CISA) of which he formerly served as president. He was a highly knowledgeable and respected official and was recently inducted into the Illinois Umpire Hall of Fame, an accomplishment he was extremely proud of. Much of Tim’s energy over the last two years has been focused on his battle with cancer. He was exemplary in his positive attitude, determination, and courage and inspired all who were blessed to know him. Throughout his battle he created a network of people who became like an extended family and showed the true meaning of “never give up”. Of all Tim’s achievements, he was most proud to be a husband and father. He would do anything for his family and his strength is a lasting legacy to Kayla and Chloe. His favorite thing to do was spend his time with his daughters, or as he so lovingly called them “my girls”. Services will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. A funeral service will be held Monday January 30, 2012 at 11 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior at the church. There will also be a visitation Sunday January 29, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. Fr. James Pankiewicz will officiate. Cremation will be accorded following the service. The family encourages attire be more umpiring shirts and camouflage than suits and ties. Memorials may be made to an education fund established for his children at Pekin Community Bank or any Hometown Community Bank or American Cancer Society.
