Obituary for Russell Freed
Russell S. Freed, 82, of Green Valley passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at his residence. He was born July 16, 1931 in South Pekin to Otis L. and Hattie L. Benjamin Freed. He married Mona L. Maile September 3, 1954 in Pekin. She survives along with his children John T. (Lisa) Freed of IL, Sterling A. (Mary Canada Freed) Freed of MO, Kathleen M. (Carl Schoon) Freed of IL, Betty M. (Scott Bridgmor) Freed of IL; grandchildren, Thaddeus J. (Brandi) Freed of IL, Timothy D. (Carolynn) Freed of IL, Amanda J. Doman of IL, Betty L. Emmons of IL, Jessa (Josh) Knox of IL, Cpl. Samantha G. Freed of San Diego, CA, Elizabeth Kathleen Bridgman of IL; great-granddaughter, Isabel Mendoza of CA and brother, Allan (Janet) Freed of IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother in law and father in law; sisters, Florence Thompson, Helen Barks and brothers, Johnny T. Freed, Donald L. Freed, Otis Lawrence Freed and Steven LaMasters. Russell served in the U.S. Army in occupied Germany. He worked for the railroad as a brakeman and conductor and later a meat cutter and manager at Thompson Food Basket. He served on the South Pekin Board and the Rankin School Board. He loved his family especially his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and became an avid golfer. Graveside services with military rites will be held Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. Rev. Gary Crull will officiate. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Veterans Food Pantry 11 S. 4th Street Suite 114, Pekin, IL 61554 attn: Steven Saal.
