Obituary for Robert Reginald Lawrence Jr.
Robert “Bob” Reginald Lawrence, Jr., age 72, passed away peacefully at 4 a.m. Monday, May 25, 2009, surrounded by his family at home in Morton, Ill. Born February 18, 1937, in New Rochelle, NY, he married Angie Harakidas on Oct. 7, 1961, in Yonkers, NY, and they spent the next 47 years building a family and enjoying many adventures together. Bob and Angie loved to travel and wintered in Texas over the past few years. A big sports fan, Bob was blessed to watch his children and grandchildren compete and excel in high school and college and beyond in baseball, basketball, football, long distance running, softball, and volleyball. He also served as an Illinois High School Association volleyball official for more than 20 years and videotaped football games for Morton High School coaches. Bob served his country as a flight engineer for the Air Force for three years in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1958. He then spent 30 years as an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, both in the New York City area and in Peoria. Bob also was owner and operator of the Sub Station in Morton, one of the area’s first authentic New York-style sub sandwich shops. In addition to Angie, Bob is survived by three children whom he was very proud of -- son Robert III, and his wife Kim of Marquette Heights, son Michael of Clarendon Hills, and daughter Lauren Gardner and her husband Scott, of Salina, Kan. Bob is also survived by his mother, Ruth (Alexander) Lawrence, of Highland Mills, NY; and two sisters – Mary Ann (Lawrence) Decker, of Highland Mills, and Jane (Lawrence) Iverson, of Southwest Harbor, Maine. He is also survived by five grandchildren he loved very much – Robert M of Pekin, Griffin of Clarendon Hills, and Brittanie, Scott, Jr., and Malcom of Salina. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert Reginald Lawrence, Sr., and his brother, John Lawrence. Bob was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton and he and Angie served as disaster volunteers for the American Red Cross. A Mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church has been scheduled for Friday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Red Cross, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Blessed Sacrament Church. The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. Pekin/Peoria is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at csmico.com
