Obituary for Richard Applegate
Richard Smith “Dick” Applegate, 66, of Peoria passed away on Friday, July 16, 2010 at Proctor Hospital.

He was born on May 8, 1944 in Pekin, Illinois to H. Smith and Mary Shane Applegate.   He married Paula Maddox in Peoria on October 22, 1983.

Surviving are his wife, Paula, of Peoria; two sisters, Carol Terry of Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada and Nancy (Michael) Bearce of Naperville, Illinois; a brother, Robert (Lisle) Applegate of Peoria; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dick graduated from Richwoods High School in Peoria in 1962 and received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Bradley University in 1966.  He served as a music educator and choral director in central Illinois schools, most recently Peoria School District 150, retiring in 2005.  For the past twenty-six years, he served as Choir Director for the Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria.  Recognized throughout the area as a skilled performer on five-string banjo, he also taught a number of private students.  Dick was a founding member of Applegate and Company.  He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia professional music fraternity.  Dick’s music, his humor and his generosity will be both fondly remembered and sorely missed by family and friends.

Abts Mortuary in Pekin is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Cremation rites have been accorded.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 20 at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria.  Reverend Michael Brown will officiate.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the School of Music at Bradley University or to the Universalist Unitarian Church Choir in Peoria.
