He was born on December 10, 1952, in Peoria to James and Charlotte Morrissey Scherer. His parents and brother, David James Scherer preceded him in death.
Philip married Mary Kathryn Scoby on August 11, 1992, in Peoria; she survives. He is also survived by his children, Stephanie Scholl, Elizabeth (partner, Anthony Collins) Brown, Veronica J. Philip worked as the Chief Clinical Officer for New Directions until retiring in 2018. Many turned to him because he listened with patience and cared deeply, offering steady, heartfelt advice. He dedicated his professional life to the addiction recovery field, where he was known for his innovative approach and for being a pioneer in addressing gambling addiction. In addition to his work in treatment and recovery services, he also served as an interventionist, helping families navigate some of their most difficult moments. His work made a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of numerous individuals and families.
He also loved to cook for others, and he took pride in preparing meals that brought people together. Above all, he cherished his wife, his children, his stepchildren, and his grandchildren, who were the center of his world. He proudly cheered on Bradley basketball, the Chicago Bears, and the St. Louis Cardinals throughout his life, and in his later years, he took great joy in sharing that love of sports with his grandchildren.
Cremation has been accorded and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
