Obituary for Peter Taylor
Peter C. Taylor, 55, of Chillicothe, IL passed away on Friday March 23, 2012 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL due to complications of brain cancer and heart disease. Pete was born October 22, 1956 in Baton Rouge, LA to Nathaniel Taylor Jr. and Rebecca Wilkins Taylor. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Gretchen Taylor. He is also survived by his mother, Rebecca Taylor; his sister, Marie Terry-Harris (Michael); brother, Nathaniel Taylor III; his sister-in-law, Marianne Stipe (Marty); his mother-in-law, Jacqueline Righter; his nephew, Eric Stipe; his nieces, Anna Stipe, Natalie Estelle (Anthony), Mikelle Harris, Corey St. Michael (Cameron), Annie Cunningham; great-nephew, Calvin St. Michael; and aunts, Sylvia Washington and Rita Wilson. He was preceded in death by his father; his sister, L. Joyce Taylor-Hayes; grandfather and namesake, Peter Wilkins and grandparents, Nathaniel and Geneva Taylor. Pete was baptized at the Great King David Church in Baton Rouge, LA. He graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. He was a lifetime member of the Scotlandville High School and Southern University Marching Bands. He was recruited by Caterpillar directly upon graduation which brought him to Central Illinois. He continued to be employed at Caterpillar. Pete was admired and loved by all, he was fondly known as “Uncle Pete” by children young and old. He would often say he and Gretchen had no children of their own; yet he had lots of them through his family both blood and chosen. Pete loved to fish, smoke his cigars, drink coffee at Starbucks and was known far and wide for his “magic vest”. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the scholarship Pete founded in honor of his sister, Joyce, to assist student teachers, donations can be made to EIU Foundation : L Joyce Taylor Scholarship foundation or the South Side Mission. Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service will be held at University United Methodist Church, 2818 N. University in Peoria at 5 p.m. on Saturday March 31, 2012 with visitation prior to the service at the church from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
