Obituary for Mary K. Abts
Mary Kathryn “Katie” Abts 66, of Pekin Passed away on Saturday January 9, 2010 in the ER of Pekin Hospital. Born in Pekin on May 30, 1943 to Leo and Anna Mae Foley Keller. She married John M. Abts on September 7, 1963, he preceded her in death on November 30, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister Patricia Hill. She is survived by her children: A. John Abts, Toni (Neal) Burks, Lee Ann Abts and Joseph “Joey” (Tammy) Abts all of Pekin, her brother Thomas (Judy) Keller of AZ and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her three grandchildren: Ryan and Brenner Abts and Sydney Burks who meant the world to her. Mary Kay was a 1964 graduate of the Graham Hospital School of Nursing, Mother of the year in 1977, former President of St. Joseph Parents Club, was a Pekin Township Trustee from 1985 to 2008, a member of the Altrusa Club, the Ladies of the Moose, the Ladies of Columbus and served as Treasurer from 2003 to 2004, was appointed to the Tazewell Co. Welfare Service Committee from 2002 to 2005, appointed to the Community Advisory Committee for the Pekin Federal Correctional Institution, was a Licensed Insurance Producer since 1989, received the Pere Marquette Award from the Catholic Diocese of Peoria for outstanding achievement, was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she was a member of the Council of Catholic Woman, was the former VP of the Altar and Rosary Society and has been the chair of the Grief and Loss committee since 1986. She also joined her husband in running Abts Mortuary after the passing of her in-laws and became owner in 2002 after her husband John’s passing. She founded Katy’s Pet Cemetery and Crematory in 1984 and helped start the Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. in 1996 and was acting President. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday January 14, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Father Timothy Nolan will officiate and burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Pekin. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Abts Mortuary. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Joseph School, St. Joseph Church or T.A.P.S.
