Mary Ellen Haak, 98, of Peoria died on August 11, 2024 at Proctor Place, her comfortable home for the past seven years.
Born July 10, 1926, in Winona, Minnesota to William and Evelyn Brueske Litchfield, she later married Willard Haak in Blue River, Wisconsin on September 25, 1955. They were married 62 years before he passed away in 2017. Her relationship with her three siblings was a big part of her life and the four “Litchfield Kids” always remained close.
Mary Ellen was employed in the accounting department of General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) in Peoria for 25 years before retiring in 1981. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter CZ, Central Illinois General Motors Retiree Club, the Bradley Braves Club and the Chicago Cub Boosters of Central Illinois. She was a life-long Cubs Fan and never missed watching a game.
She is survived by her brother William (Bill) Litchfield of Denver, CO; sister Nancy Richards of Redondo Beach, California; nieces Jane Rissmann (Scott), Sue Reed, Kelly McQuiston (Bob Hasson), Susan Richards Cloud, and Aimie Litchfield; nephews Joe Vance (Linda), Jim Vance (Jodie), Kevin McQuiston, Geoff Richards (Metta), Wynn Richards, Dean Ingleman (Leslie) and John Ingleman (Julie); plus many grand nieces’ and nephews’ families. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Willard, sister Audrey Vance, and recently, nephew Bill Litchfield, Jr. and nephew-in-law Jerry Reed.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice or to the John C. Proctor Endowment Home by mailing a check to 2724 West Reservoir Boulevard, Peoria IL 61615. Burial arrangements are through the Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois.
Mary Ellen’s 98th Birthday Party will serve as her Memorial Service with her smiling and celebrating in the party room with 18 other friends and family members just one month before her passing. It was a grand day honoring her and she loved it.
Gratitude and appreciation from the family goes to Mary Ellen’s special friend Melanie Greseth, who was always her angel when she needed one, and also to the wonderful staff at Proctor Place for their loving and compassionate care for many years and especially in the final days of her life.
We are all better people for having Mary Ellen in our lives . . . but our world will be less beautiful without her in it. .
