Obituary for Mary Balof
Mary Catherine Balof, formerly of Russell, Kentucky, and most recently, of Washington, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at her residence at Washington Christian Village nursing home in Washington, Illinois. Born in Ashland, Kentucky, on June 13, 1922, the daughter of Eubert and Moncy Steenbergen, She married George Edward (Ted) Balof on January 19, 1946 in Ashland, Kentucky. She was formerly a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Ashland, Kentucky; Plaza Church of the Nazarene in Russell, Kentucky, and most recently, First Church of the Nazarene in Peoria, Illinois. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Kathy (Dean) Patterson of East Peoria, Illinois; two grandchildren, Mr. Wayne E. Patterson and his wife Jennifer of Houston, Texas; and Mrs. Julia C. (Patterson) Hendricks and her husband Michael of Winfield, Illinois. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Drew and Kate Patterson of Houston, Texas; and one brother, Bob Steenbergen , of Ashland, Kentucky. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George (Ted) Balof, one daughter, Mrs. Linda Beth (Ken) Delong, of Rockford, Illinois; one sister, Betty Haufler, of Ocala, Florida; and one brother, Jack Steenbergen, of Columbia, South Carolina. Mary attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky and Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. Mary and husband Ted were in the grocery business for many years in Ironton, Ohio. Mary also spent several years as an employee and tailor at McConnell’s clothing store in Russell, Kentucky. Pastor Jim Book will conduct a memorial service for Mary at Peoria First Church of the Nazarene, 5504 North University Avenue, Peoria, Illinois on Sunday October 2, 2011, beginning at 11:30 A.M., immediately following the Sunday Morning worship and communion service. A graveside service and burial will be held later at the Belfonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Kentucky. Cremation has been accorded. Memorials may be made to Peoria First Church of the Nazarene.
