Obituary for Marlies Seidel
Maria Luise Henrietta “Marlies” Seidel, 88, of Pekin, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Washington Christian Village in Washington, IL.
Marlies was born July 5, 1930 in Cloppenburg, Germany to Joseph and Louise Stor Sandhaus.
Marlies was one of thirteen children. Hartwig, Ingeborg, and Jochen died in childhood. Ten siblings survived to adulthood. She is survived by her siblings: Gertrud Scholle, Ruth Pradel, Maria Lake, Karin Bohmann, Wolfgang Sandhaus, and Ludger Sandhaus, all of Germany; Renate Berthin of Switzerland and Elisabeth Watling of England. Marlies was preceded in death by her sister, Alexandra Voss.
When Marlies was eighteen, she launched the adventure of her life and this shy girl left her family in Germany to work as a nanny in Oxford England. There, she met and then married Karl Seidel on September 9, 1955 in Headington, Oxford, England. He preceded her in death on March 26, 2004.
Marlies and Karl had three sons, Christopher of Pekin, Brendan (Suzette) of Germantown Hills and Wolfgang (Beth) of Mapleton. Their sons gave them six grandchildren, Stephanie, Colin, Kiersten, Dylan, Dane, and Lenna.
Marlies and Karl’s adventures took them from England to Canada, to the U.S.A, eventually settling in Pekin, Illinois. In addition to raising her sons, Marlies worked for many years in the restaurant at Bergner’s in Pekin. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin.
A memorial mass for Marlies will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. Cremation rites have been accorded and she will be laid to rest with Karl at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Pekin. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Church Parish Center Building Fund in her name.
