Obituary for Joyce Pfieffer Gardner Walker
Joyce Pfeiffer Gardner Walker, 79, of South Pekin, passed away in her home, in the company of loved ones on March 16, 2009. Joyce was the daughter of Walter and Daisy (Duley) Pfeiffer, and grew up with her four siblings in Pekin. Joyce had one daughter, Jodi Gardner Murphy, two granddaughters, Jena and Molly, and two great granddaughters. Jocye was always a source of fun. She enjoyed life, and made lifelong friends wherever she lived. Over her lifetime, her passions included Harley-riding, fishing, and traveling the United States in her motor home. In her early years, Joyce worked at the Peoria State Hospital as a nurse’s aide and at Pfeiffer Auto Sales in Pekin in the office. Moving to Southern California, she worked in the Pathology Lab at St. Jude’s Hospital in Fullerton, a position from which she retired in 1983. In retirement she lived for several years in Kissimmee River Fish Resort in Okeechobee, Florida, near her two sisters. In 1990 Joyce and her sister, Jerry, moved back to the Pekin area, and delighted in assisting their brother Jack, and his family with their business, Pfeiffer Auction Sales & Service in South Pekin. Joyce was preceded in death by husbands Delmar Gardner, Don Gardner, Charles O. Walker and her beloved daughter Jodi. Jodi passed July 5, 2008, in Helena, Montana, where she was a highly experienced and respected nurse. Joyce’s siblings included Gene Pfeiffer and Jack Pfeiffer of South Pekin (both deceased), Geraldine Pfeiffer Wright of Pekin, and Pauline Pfeiffer Layne Hanna now of Okeechobee, Florida. Nieces and nephews include Ickie Pfeiffer, Diane Pfeiffer Thurman, Jackie Pfeiffer Pociask, Connie Pfeiffer Colson, Rita Pfeiffer, Diane Pfeiffer Fiedler, Richard Pfeiffer (deceased), Steve Pfeiffer, David Pfeiffer, Mike Layne, Bonnie Layne, Sandra Schimmelpfenning and Dana Sue Hanna. Joyce will be remembered fondly by many friends and family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to TAPS animal shelter in Pekin. A Celebration of life will be held in Joyce’s honor Sunday March 22, 2009 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Super Sports located behind Pfeiffer’s Auction building in South Pekin. The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. is assisting the family with arrangements.
