John Pershing Scudder, 66, of Bartonville, Illinois, passed away surrounded by his family on March 29, 2026, at Carle Health Methodist Hospital after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
John was born on February 7, 1960, in Peoria, Illinois, to Robert Wesley and Beverly Jeanne (Martindale) Scudder. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Robert Scudder Jr., William Scudder, Barbara Widener, and Laurie VanDyke. He is survived by his sister, Tami Scudder; brothers-in-law, George Widener and Roger VanDyke; and his lifelong friend, Gregg “Muggs” Mulligan.
On May 28, 1988, John married Paula (Landwehr), the love of his life, and she survives. Together they built a beautiful family and raised three sons, Micah (Kim) Fuller, Matthew Fuller, and John Wesley (Kaitlyn) Scudder. John was a proud grandfather, Paw Paw, to Jake Waldrop, Melody Fuller, Zeke Fuller, Piper Scudder, and Jacey Scudder, who brought him endless joy, pride, and happiness.
John retired from the Peoria County Highway Department in 2019 after 27 years of dedicated service. He was a loyal Cubs, Bears, and NASCAR fan and rarely missed watching a game or race. He loved spending time outside and found satisfaction in keeping his lawn well manicured and vehicles spotless. More than anything, John will be remembered as a devoted family man whose greatest happiness came from time spent with the people he loved. His strength, unwavering support of family and friends, and warm hugs will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
To honor John’s wishes, there will be no funeral service, and cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will be at St John Lutheran Cemetery in Bartonville, Illinois and a Celebration of Life will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the American Legion Post 979 in Bartonville, Illinois.
