PEORIA – James Caldwell Welton, 95, died on December 1, 2023 at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria, IL.


Survivors include his daughter, Marci Welton Corbin of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Reid Welton, who passed away November 25, 2011, and his son, Mark Welton, who passed away on April 26, 2016.


Jim was born to James and Mary Caldwell Welton on February 28, 1928. A farm boy, Jim grew up in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Slippery Rock High School, he enrolled in the Marines, where he served in the Philippines for 15 months. He was honorably discharged as corporal. From there he attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, graduating in 1952 with a B.S. in Economics. After graduating, he was employed by Armstrong Cork as a sales representative for 12 years. He left Armstrong and enrolled in the New York Institute of Finance for one year.


He joined the Illinois Company in Chicago as a stockbroker after finishing his studies. He was moved by the Illinois firm to its Peoria headquarters in 1977. He left the Illinois firm in 1981 and started working for First Allied Securities as the Peoria branch manager. He left First Allied in 2015 to join Chapin Davis. He transferred to River City Wealth Partners after Chapin Davis. He decided on his own to stay in the brokerage company after selling his ownership stake. He did so until his passing.


Jim was an avid golfer and fisherman. He particularly loved traveling to northern Manitoba and hunting northern pikes. He spent fifty-one years as a Peoria Country Club member.


Cremation rights have been accorded. Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of life, which will be held at the Waters of Life Chapel at Lutheran Hillside Village on Tuesday, December 5. Visitation is scheduled for 10:30 am, with the service following at 11:30 am. Pastor Patrick Monroe will preside. Memorials may be made to the Peoria Humane Society, 2600 N.E. Perry, Peoria, IL 61603.
