Obituary for Jack Genung
Jack K. Genung, 78, of Eureka, quietly passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017, due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was born January 1, 1939 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of the late Harold and Frances (Rudisel) Genung.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen (Miller) Genung, whom he married on June 10, 1959 in Terre Haute, Indiana. They spent the last 41 years living in Eureka, Illinois and the surrounding community.
Also surviving are his three sons, Mark Genung, Brad (Christine) Genung, and Scott (Carol) Genung; six grandchildren Heather Genung, Sarah and Rebecca Seward-Genung, Beatrix Genung, and Joshua and Ashley Genung, as well as a sister, Shirley (Genung) McIndoo.
Jack was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy (Genung) Hargis.
Jack enjoyed a lifetime of experiences. In his youth, he was a member of the Knothole Gang, where he played baseball with minor league professionals. He played football in high school, and he led his team to the state championship every year. After high school, he took up drag racing before getting married. During his career at Allied Supermarkets, he rose through the ranks of management. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fly fishing, boating, yardwork, and animals. He also loved history, and after watching his son, Scott, at a Civil War re-enactment, he and his wife decided to become re-enactors themselves. They continued to attend re-enactments for a number of years with Scott’s family. Upon his retirement from Parsons Manufacturing in 2003, Jack and Mary traveled the Midwest for adventure and fun.
Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
