Obituary for Harold Dowell
Harold Lee Dowell Jr., born May 12, 1927 to Gladys (Sweet) and Harold L. Dowell, Sr., passed away on June 24, 2018 at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria, Illinois. Harold leaves behind his loving wife of 70 years, Johnnie (McKinley) Dowell, two nieces, Sari Ann Molta of Syracuse, N.Y., and Diana Lesley Roe of Round Rock, Texas. Predeceasing Harold were his two sisters, Mildred Dowell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Clara Ann Dowell of Peoria, Illinois.
Harold spent his early years serving his country, first in the U.S. Coast Guard, and later in the U. S. Navy in Korea. He studied mechanical engineering, graduating with his B.S. from the University of Oklahoma, his M.S. from the University of North Dakota, and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He worked for Soconey Vacuum (now Exxon Mobile) in Augusta, Kansas, and later as a professor of engineering at the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, N. D., as well as at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Later, Harold worked at Keystone Steel and Wire Co. in Bartonville, IL, as well as at National Wheel-O-Vator in Roanoke, Illinois, where he continued to work until he turned 80 years old.
Memorial Services will be held at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria, Illinois on Thursday, July 5 at 12 noon. Individual memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
