Obituary for George Gibons
Mr. George Gibons died peacefully at Heartland-Manorcare on Saturday, January 31 in Peoria, IL at the age of 90. George was born on August 18, 1924 in Princeton, IL to George Leeroy and Minnie (Shallean) Gibons. After graduating from Princeton HS, he served during WWII in the US Army Air Force. He graduated from Bradley in 1950 with a degree in education and completed his Masters in 1951. George married Esther Winters in 1952. After moving to Peoria, George taught school for 30 years in Germantown Hills, Sipp and Rolling Acres. George is survived by his wife Esther Gibons, sons David and Ric, granddaughter Alysia, and great grandson Alex Connor Dittman. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Elaine and his brother Richard. George was an avid Bridge player and golfer and greatly enjoyed reading. He was a gregarious man who loved people, teaching and who would talk to anyone. He was an active and dedicated member of the Peoria Area Retired Teacher's Association, the Peoria Senior Golf Association, and the Northside Optimists Club. Also he was a member of First Federated Church in Peoria and First Presbyterian Church before that. Cremation has been accorded; a memorial service is scheduled for Sat, Feb 14 at 11 AM at First Federated Church, 3601 N. Sheridan Rd, Peoria with a visitation preceding at 10 AM. Rev. Dr. Forrest Krummel will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate George’s life.
