Obituary for Edward J McAvoy
Edward J. McAvoy, Jr., 74, of Dunlap, passed away Monday, November 14, at 6:10 a.m. at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.

Ed was born on February 21, 1942, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the son of Edward J. and Delcie H. McAvoy. They preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Beth; one brother, Michael McAvoy; one step-son, Robert Ward; and one nephew John (Michelle) McAvoy.

Ed graduated from Texas A&M in 1963 with a BS in Engineering and the University of Arkansas in 1970 with an MBA in Business. He worked for Caterpillar, Inc. stateside and abroad, retiring April 1, 2007, with 44 years of service.

He always enjoyed life with a positive attitude and sense of humor. He was a social individual who appreciated many friendships and enjoyed playing golf, squash and kayaking. During his youth he was active in scouting and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a participant and board member of Heart of Illinois Harvest; a team member of OSF Pastoral Care; a coordinator for “Shoes for Water” (a safe drinking water project for underdeveloped countries); a participant in a mission project in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina; and, he took vacation days to work in the kitchen on Fridays of Cursillo weekends.

Ed was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church where a Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. The Reverend Patrick Henehan will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heart of Illinois Harvest, P.O. Box 6702, Peoria, IL 61612, St. Jude Catholic Church, or OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.
