Obituary for Dorthy DePratt Murray
Dorothy DePratt Murray, 74, of Peoria died March 10, 2008 at OSF St. Francis Hospital. Born in Chicago Jan 1, 1934, she met her husband Elliott at First Presbyterian Church of Chicago where they married in 1963. She is survived by Elliott and sons Ralph and Vincent. Dorothy graduated from Chicago State University and taught grade school in Chicago for 10 years, moved to Peoria in 1967 and in 1968 opened and was head teacher at the Common Place Pre-School. In 1978 Dorothy earned a Masters in Counseling and Human Development from Bradley University and counseled there and at Human Service Center for 10 years and then full time at Bradley until she retired in 1999.

She was active as a volunteer and sometimes as a board member in many groups including NAACP, Center for Prevention of Abuse, St. Jude Midwest Affiliate, WCBU, Peoria Area Friends of International Students, ICC Foundation Board and Planned Parenthood. Recently with Global Village, a fair trade store in Peoria Heights and as a volunteer tutor in Dist. 150 schools. Dorothy loved music and the theater. She played and used to teach piano. She supported the Peoria Symphony and local jazz and blues artists. Her acting career had its start with the lead role in the Bradley production of Trouble in Mind in 1995. She then played small roles in a number of Cornstock Lab shows.

Dorothy was a beautiful, loving, and compassionate woman with a true gift of friendship. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends.

Her remains will be cremated and a celebration of her life/memorial service will be held at UU Church, 3000 W. Richwoods Blvd. in Peoria Sat. Mar. 15 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any of the organizations listed above. The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. is assisting the family with arrangements.
