Donald “Jake” Larry Richards, 87, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Richards; his first wife, Madeline Richards; his daughter, Deanna Richards; his wife, Carol Starr, whom he married later in life; and his brothers, James, Clifford, George, and William Richards.
Jake dedicated much of his working life to service and hard work. He retired from Caterpillar, where he worked in security and on the manufacturing line. He also proudly served the Village of Creve Coeur Fire Department for 25 years and retired as Chief, a role that reflected his lifelong commitment to his community and to helping others.
In retirement, Jake continued doing what he loved most—being around people. Alongside his wife Madeline, he opened Maddy’s Hialeah in Goofy Ridge, a place filled with laughter, stories, and friendship, which he enjoyed for 10 years.
Jake is survived by his brother Jack Richards, his five children: Betty (Terry) Keithley, Terry (Julie) Richards, Larry Richards, B.G. Myers, and Darlene Grant; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, with two more expected to arrive in 2026; and one great-great-grandchild.
Later in life, upon marrying Carol, Jake’s heart grew even larger. He lovingly embraced the role of bonus dad and grandpa to six children, and to many more children and grandchildren who became family simply by knowing him. His door, his table, and his heart were always open.
Jake was a man who loved deeply and lived fully. He loved his family above all else, along with traveling, camper life, and his beloved Texas alongside his wife Carol. He was truly a collector of family—a melting pot of connections, friendships, and stories. Jake never met a stranger and was as ornery as he was kind, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who crossed his path.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the Creve Coeur VFW, at 4:00 PM on February 7, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Creve Coeur Fire Department, in honor of Jake’s years of service and dedication.
