Obituary for Donald Hicks
Donald (Don) D Hicks, age 86 of Pekin, formerly of Pontiac, IL and New Smyrna Beach, FL, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Pekin Hospital. He was born July 15, 1925, in Watseka, IL to John E and Amy Lillian (Davis) Hicks.  He married Mildred Miller on April 20, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York.  She survives. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John E Hicks, Jr. Survivors include one brother, Frank of Pottstown, PA; one son, Don (Barb) Hicks of Pontiac; two daughters, Carol (Oral) Olson of Hopedale and Flo (Joe) Berry of Mapleton; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A World War II Navy veteran, Don served on the USS Wasp.  He received the Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Theatre Medal, Victory Medal and a Letter of Commendation.  He worked in farm equipment sales for the majority of his working years, retiring in 1988.  He was a member of the Pontiac American Legion Post 78 for 67 years. Don umpired baseball for many years for the Pontiac Junior Baseball Association and enjoyed running the clock at home basketball games and working on the chain gang during football season during the "60's".  He was what you would call the Original Sports Booster. In April, 2010 Don was an honorary participant in the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight. His trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial was an experience that he spoke of often and a trip he said he would never forget.
