Obituary for Deloris "Dee" Shoemaker
Deloris Margaret Shoemaker “Dee”, 84, of Hanna City, Illinois, lost her battle with cancer on Thursday, June 11, 2020. Her final days were spent at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria with her devoted family supporting her through this difficult time. Her daughter, Lisa, who was also her best friend was at her side when she moved on to her heavenly home.

Deloris was born on March 28, 1936, in Peoria County, Illinois, the daughter of Herman August “Gus” Meyer and Sena (Johnson) Meyer. She married John “Mo” Shoemaker on June 27, 1957. He proceeded her in death on January 8, 1999. Also proceeding her in death were one sister, Anna Boswell and one brother, Seebo Meyer. Surviving is one sister, Dorothy (Robert) Farner of Toluca. She is also survived by her two daughters, Robin (David) Steckel of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, and Lisa (Raymond) Suydam of Hanna City. She leaves behind her granddaughters Paula (Kurt) Daniels of Fairview; Leslie (Colin) Carver of Carlyle; Rebecca (Mike Smith) Suydam of Nashville, Illinois; five great-grandchildren Eli Carver, Morgun Daniels, Avery Daniels, Alexander Smith and Matthew Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

Dee was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church in Bartonville. She lived in the town of Eden, Illinois, nearly all of her life. Dee attended Pleasant Grove & Patton grade schools. She was one of the first members of the Eden-Go-Getters 4-H club and later spent many years as a leader for that club. She met her husband while working locally as a waitress at Maroni’s and then later waitressed at the Log Cabin. She worked several years as a sales clerk in Hanna City at Rick’s True Value. Later on she worked for Logan School and then Farmington School as a playground supervisor and as a server in the cafeteria. Dee especially adored working around the small children.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend who had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. She devoted many years living with and caring for her older sister, Anna. Her house was the gathering place for family, as she was a great cook and loved entertaining. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and cherished the time she could spend with them. She enjoyed attending her Farmington Class of 1954 reunions. She loved going to auctions and seemed to always come home with a special treasure. She hosted an annual yard sale which brought friends and family together. Although not a fan of flying, she took trips to New Jersey, Arizona and most recently in March to Florida to visit her sister, Dorothy. She loved the view of the ocean and would peacefully gaze at it by the hour.

A graveside service will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in rural Peoria County with Pastor Jay Johnson officiating.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Cemetery Association or the boiler fund at St. John Lutheran Church of Bartonville.

The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. Pekin/Peoria is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at csmico.com
