Obituary for David E Johnson
David Evan Johnson of Manito, passed away at 2:50pm on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. David was born March 31, 1942 in Cokato, MN. He was the son of Evan and Ruth Johnson who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Kathleen Joy Miller; 2 sons, Gregg Evan Johnson (Jeanette) and David Nathaniel "Nate" Johnson; along with his grandchildren Sarah, Michaela and Bryan Johnson. Also surviving are his 2 sisters, Marilyn (Bob) Feero of Minnesota and Pauline Holston of Arizona. Dave grew up in the MN communities of Stockholm, Blue Earth & Breckenridge. As a child Dave heard the good news of God's love and forgiveness through Jesus Christ and surrendered his life to Christ as a child. As an adolescent, Dave heard the missionary challenge to take the Good News to people and nations that had not heard the Biblical teaching of the love of Jesus.  Dave committed his life to obeying God's call to missionary service at the age of 12 and that became his life's focus and purpose. Dave prepared for that purpose after high school by attending Prairie Bible College in Three Hills, AB Canada, and Columbia Bible College in Columbia, SC. While at Prairie Bible College, Dave met Kathleen Miller who, from the 1st day he saw her he knew she would be his partner in life and ministry. Dave's commitment to serving God and preaching the good news took him to live in Jamaica and Brazil from 1969 - 1986.  He worked for the mission organization WorldTeam for a period of 20 years.  After that Dave continued to work through international sports ministries that shared the good news in Central America, Dominican Republic, Brazil, North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey and Cuba. Dave never met a stranger and loved the challenge of making friends and sharing the love of Jesus wherever his travels took him. He prayed he would be a reflection of his Savior Jesus Christ and sought to pattern his life from the words and life of Jesus. Dave's heartbeat are best described by two verses from the Bible. Matthew 9:37-38 "When Jesus saw the crowds he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd."  and John 4:35 "Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest."  These verses which shaped Dave's heart and life spring from his life's verse:  John 15:16 "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit …". Dave's memorial service will be at 11:00am on October 3, 2015 at Springlake Missionary Church with visitation starting at 10:00am. The family encourages blood donations to the American Red Cross on his behalf for their great work in helping Dave during his life.  For more information contact your local American Red Cross Donation Center.
