Obituary for Addison Leroy Abernathy

Addison Leroy Abernathy passed away at 9:17 pm, Thursday January 29, 2026, at his home in Pekin, Illinois.

He was born on March 22, 1925, in Table Grove, Illinois to James Leroy and Mina Abernathy.

He married Miriam Reed on May 09, 1952, in Bushnell, Illinois. She preceded him in death in 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clifton and four sisters, Alpha, Ruth, Ethel and Charlotte.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Addison graduated from Table Grove High School in June of 1943. He was drafted into the Navy one month later. He was in the Navy from July 1943 until February 1946.

In the war Addison prayed to God that if he lived, he would become a missionary upon returning home. When he landed in Oregon, relatives taught him truthful facts from the Bible. In August of 1947 he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Upon returning to Illinois, he began his missionary service with his mother, Mina, as his partner in their town and surrounding area. He aided in starting a congregation in Bushnell. During this time, he met his wife, Miriam.

Together Addison and Miriam shared in the ministry work by providing free home Bible education to interested ones. Together they aided many people to dedication and baptism. During this time, they resided in Canton; Bushnell; Philipsburg, Pennsylvania; Red Oak, Iowa; and Pekin.

During the years from 1959 to 1972 Addison served as a circuit minister, serving a different congregation each week.

In 1976 they returned to Illinois to help aging relatives. Addison then worked for the U.S. Post Office for several years until his retirement.

When Addison was 90, he once again began full-time ministry work locally. He continued until he was 96, bringing his total missionary work to 31 years. He had kept his word to God.

Even though he did not have biological children, he had countless friends of all ages that were his family. His mild manner, true interest in others, and positive spirit drew people to him.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Sunday, March 01, 2026, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. 2726 Broadway Rd., Pekin. Barry Hatton, Elder, will officiate.

Donations may be made to the Pekin Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Pekin/Peoria is assisting with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at csmico.com
